Is it true? Could it happen? I don’t want to get my hopes up…but too late!

Obama ‘08

We can repair this world. Obama used the phrase “repair the world”. Their is a Jewish phrase called Tikkun Olam. Tikkun means to repair and Olam means everything. The Jew’s believed that one day everything would be restored to everything it was meant to be. God’s dream for the world seemed to be shattered in the garden but ever since he has been on a shalom reclaiming process. And he is calling people to join in on restoring this world to everything that it was meant to be. At the cross Jesus took all of the broken pieces that have resulted from this shattered world and placed them upon himself and the resurrection is the promise that God will put everything to rights. Jesus calls his church to be a living eucharist, to break ourselves open, in his name and to join with the God who is restoring everything.

Tutoring

So I just got back from tutoring a few minutes ago at the Gospel Center Rescue Mission. It went so much smoother than last Tuesday. We had computers available this week which we didn’t have available last week…which was a plus. And there were three of us this week working with the kids rather than just two of us. I worked with a kid named BJ. We read seven pages over 45 minutes all about elephants. Actually it was about a Lion going after a baby elephant and the pack of elephants surrounded the young to protect them. We didn’t finish so I’m not sure how it ended. But anyways, the kid did awesome and we’ll pick up reading next week!

Bowling

So I went bowling on Saturday night. During the first frame I knocked down two pins because I fouled on one of my throws. After I had five frames I stood at 50 pins. And then I went on a five strike streak to finish with a personal best of 183. It was pretty much amazing. I also got in trouble with the West Lane staff because I had the flash on when I took this pictures:

P.S. “G” stands for Goose. You will have to ask Stan why I’m called Goose.

Surprised by Hope

352 pages of sheer goodness…
surprised-by-hope.jpg
…seriously.

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those who thou think’st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but they pictures be,
Much pleasure–then, from thee much more must flow;
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.
Thou’rt slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well,
And better than thy stroke. Why swell’st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more. Death, thou shalt die.

N.T. Wright quotes these words of John Donne (from his writing I guess he hung out with Shakespear) then makes these statements:
“Death is a great enemy, but it has been conquered and will at the last be conquered fully.”
“Death is important, it is an enemy, but for the Christian, it is a beaten enemy.”
“Donne sees life after death in two stages: first, a short sleep, then an eternal waking.”
“Death will be not simply redefined but defeated.”
